FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions

We encourage you all to use this toolkit to continue your learning and we know questions will come up. Please always feel free to ask questions in the comments section below (or on any micro-lesson). You can also always reach out directly with your regional manager if you need support.

Below we have compiled some questions and answers from our online live session.

  1. The size of the sample plot, 20 m by 60 m is too large
    1. Answer: Within that 20 m by 60 m plot, you do not need to monitor all of trees. Use the species approach to understand how many of each species of tree you need to monitor in the plot area.
  2. Is there a difference in the type and size of the tree and the amount of carbon produced?
    1. Answer: Not with our tool. The tool calculates the average carbon sequestered for any species but there is a different calculation needed for trees that have a diameter above versus below 11 inches
  3. Should we also consider tree age when choosing the sample?
    1. Answer: It is important to make sure to monitor new plantings in addition to existing plantings. The height and circumference/diameter will reflect the age but there is also space in the tool to record an age range
  4. Is the offline method for capturing data reliable for areas where there is no internet connection?
    1. Answer: Jotform is able to record the data even when there is no internet connection available. You can use offline maps as well for gps. Sumarni also uses POPtech to geotag the location of each tree planted.
  5. What if our standard plot size is different from the suggested 20 m by 60 m plot?
    1. Answer: If it is smaller than 20 m by 60 m then the guidelines won’t be accurate. If this is the case, then can scale the plot according to the area of conservation available. If it is larger or about the same size then the guidelines can be applied. You can discuss this matter with WEA Regional Program Managers.
  6. What offline gps coordinate service do you recommend?
    1. For android users, https://maps.me/
    2. For iPhone users, insert screenshot of Compass app on iPhone
  7. Is it mandatory to use Jotform?
    1. Answer: it's okay to use any platform that is comfortable for you
  8. Are these sampling techniques applicable for those who are restoring farmland?
    1. Answer: You can use by area or by species and make a scalable plot for sampling depending on your area of conservation, you can discuss with WEA Regional Program Managers about this matter.
