Sampling Methods for Carbon Monitoring

Download

In order to track carbon impacts accurately and consistently, it’s important to choose the right method for monitoring tree growth and sequestration. WEA and grassroots program leads collaboratively identified two distinct approaches to carbon monitoring: Area-based sampling and Species-based sampling. Each method is tailored to fit different types of planting projects—whether restoration occurs in a continuous ecosystem or across fragmented, species-focused plots. This lesson introduces both methods and helps you determine which is best for your project.

Learning Goals:

  • Understand the two main methods of carbon sampling: Area-based and Species-based.
  • Recognize the types of landscapes and goals best suited to each method.
  • Be able to determine which sampling method aligns with your reforestation site and objectives.
  • Appreciate how localized decision-making ensures accurate, community-driven monitoring.
