AREA Protocol - Establishing a Sample Plot
Once the baseline is established, the next step in the AREA protocol is to set up your sample plots. These plots are where the actual data collection takes place. Each sample plot should be laid out with care—perpendicular to the baseline and precisely measured—so that carbon data is representative of the ecosystem. This lesson will guide you through how to determine where and how to place your sample plots using a compass, GPS, and transect tape, ensuring scientific rigor and comparability.
Learning Goals:
- Learn to position sample plots accurately along a 300-meter baseline.
- Understand the recommended dimensions (20x60 meters) and orientation of plots.
- Practice using field tools to create a minimum of two sample plots per hectare.
- Ensure ecosystem diversity is represented by placing plots in each major environment type.
